Overview

Contrary to high modernist residential architecture involving a single creative vision – with figures like Corbusier, Wright and Breuer controlling every aesthetic decision – this house is the inverse. Conceived as a “museum for living,” the Davoli-McDonagh residence is filled with individual expression and varied viewpoints. A work of art that accommodates other works of art, the house is a veritable prism of creativity.

The spirit behind the 14,500 square-foot house is the husband and wife client, he a blues singer/venture capitalist, she a professor / feminist activist. The couple gave Schwartz/Silver Architects of Boston, free reign to develop a compelling architectural idea. Their only insistence was that the overall scheme preserve the natural attributes of the five-acre site, with a rolling topography, heavy trees and ground cover and a steep 80- footdrop-off that leads to a mile-long lake.
