Landscapes & Gardens explores how to create meaning through dynamic, interactive, and exultant landscape. Whether elementally reductive or rich, highly programmed or passive, culturally interpretive or teeming with the phenomena of nature’s own systems, the built landscapes of Hargreaves Associates seek the power of connection to our day-to-day lives.
This volume celebrates these themes in the work of renowned landscape architect George Hargreaves and the firm he established. As Professor Julia Czerniak of Syracuse University wrote in the foreword:
“Public gardens are tremendous assets. They act as treasured neighborhood gathering places, as cultural artifacts that reflect contemporary aesthetic concerns, and they foster appreciation for […] all things botanical: plant appearance, performance, behavior, care, and property—from the economic to the edible.”
Hargreaves Associates has been on the forefront of landscape architectural practice since its founding in 1983, creating a narrative approach to place-making that layers history, ecology, and environmental form. Hargreaves maintains offices of landscape architects and planners in San Francisco, California; Cambridge, Massachusetts; New York City; and London, UK.
George Hargreaves is the Founder and Design Director of Hargreaves Associates. He taught at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design for twenty years, serving as a Professor in Practice from 1996 to 2006 and Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture from 1996 to 2003. Hargreaves Associates published Landscape Alchemy through ORO Editions in 2009 and George co-edited the book Large Parks in 2007 with Princeton Architectural Press.
Mary Margaret Jones is a Senior Principal and President of Hargreaves Associates, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the American Academy in Rome, and Vice President of the Board of ODC Dance. She has been a visiting critic in landscape architecture at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, lectures widely nationally and internationally, and leads projects across the firm’s offices.
Gavin McMillan is a Senior Principal and Sustainability Director of Hargreaves Associates. Despite a love of gardens instilled by his mom, Gavin is not a gardener due to his nomadic working lifestyle. Like many others, he enjoys gardens in the public realm, whether built by himself or others. As he sees newer gardens struggle and older gardens prosper he is always thinking about how to improve them.
