MASTERcrit was inaugurated in 2015 as a hybrid series of events that encompassed lectures, critiques and a charrette. Modeled on the traditional notion of a “Master Class” the workshop enlisted the best graduating students from the school as nominated by the faculty to work in an intensive pedagogic setting with a world-class practitioner. The so-called invited “MASTERcritics” were MOS in 2015, Andrew Zago in 2016, and Jürgen Mayer H. in 2017. In all cases, these architects were tasked with presenting a project brief to the team, which reflected a current pre-occupation in their own discursive production. Students in turn were asked to produce artifacts that manifested their responses. In addition to documentation of the workshops and resultant work, the book includes the briefs and transcripts of conversations.
MAIN CONTRIBUTOR Jasmine Benyamin is Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning. She received her Ph.D. in Architecture (history/theory) from Princeton University and her Master of Architecture degree from Yale. She currently teaches design studios and seminars at all levels and is the Chair of the PhD. Program.
Professor Robert Greenstreet, Ph.D., is an architect and Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwauke. Dr. Greenstreet is the author/co-author of seven books, has contributed to twenty other texts and handbooks, and has published over one hundred and seventy working papers and articles. In addition to being a registered architect in the United Kingdom and recipient of the Topaz Medallion, he is a practicing arbitrator, mediator, and expert witness recognized in both the United States and Europe.
The work of J. Mayer H. and Partner, Architekten resides at the intersection of architecture, communication, and new technology. In projects that range in scale from urban planning proposals to buildings, installations and objects, the firm explores the relationships between the human body, technology and nature, through the lens of new spatial productions.
Andrew Zago, partner and founder of Zago Architecture, has over twenty-five years of professional experience in architecture, urbanism, and education. His practice brings open-ended, creative inquiry to disciplinary concerns in architecture. Noted for its prescient articulation of emerging sensibilities, Zago Architecture weds quasi-autonomous aesthetic studies to the art of making buildings and cities. In doing so, Zago Architecture reaffirms the substantial and productive link amongst art, architecture, and urbanism.
Founded in 2003, MOS Architects (Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample) create work that engages in playful experimentation and serious research. In addition to the completion of several schools, houses, exhibitions, and installations, they are the authors of several books including Everything All at Once. They are associate professors of architecture at Princeton and Columbia respectively.
