Overview

Waltzing with Brando is the story of Marlon Brando and architect Bernard Judge living and working together on an unpopulated island near Tahiti between 1970 and 1974. It is an account of the four years they were developing a plan for, and later building, a small hotel on the Polyneisian atoll of Tetiaroa. Waltzing with Brando is a compelling story of a young architect who found himself, quite unexpectedly, living with Brando on a tiny speck of land within a crashing coral reef. The story includes a wealth of wild, funny and at times dangerous exploits. The narrative covers the joys, as well as the trials and tribulations of building a paradise in the midst of limpid lagoons, swaying palms and brilliant, white sand beaches.

Authors

Bernard Judge was born in New York City in 1931, and spent his early childhood at his home outside Paris, in Nicaragua and Mexico City. After high school in Forest Hills, NY Judge served in the US Naval Construction Battalions in French Morocco for four years, followed by a year studying architecture at the Beaux arts in Paris. He received initial recognition upon finishing his architectural studies at the University of Southern California in 1960, when an experimental geodesic house he built was published in several international journals. The focus of his work is residential design, historic preservation, and resort facility planning, with particular concentration on the local environment and culture. In 1977, he was awarded a US patent for a pre-cut residential module. He has conducted housing research in ten countries around the world, lectured at numerous colleges and universities, and has addressed the International Society of Coral Reef Studies. Waltzing with Brando is his first architectural monograph.
