Overview

Asia’s first and only sustainable light art festival, Light Marina Bay is organized by the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore, and celebrates the sights and sounds of Marina Bay, one of the focal points of Singapore’s cityscape.

The third edition of the festival was held March 7th through 30th in 2014, with the theme Light HeART. As festival curator, the focus for the ONG&ONG team was to bring out the key message, that the awareness of sustainability through light is only possible if it resonates deep in our hearts —an enlightenment from within.

This book will attempt to document the spirit and motivations behind the works made for the festival, through interviews with and personal essays by the artists, as well as those of our other collaborators. These will also include their thoughts about the lighting of urban spaces in general, bringing together their personal experiences and work as practitioners of the craft.

Authors

A registered architect with 28 years of experience, Fun Siew Leng is the Group Director of Urban Planning & Design at the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore.

CLOUD was created by Canadian artists and collaborators, Caitlin Brown and Wayne Garrett. Exploring themes of public interaction, art in unexpected spaces, community collaboration and play, Brown and Garrett began building artificial light works in 2010.

1.26 Singapore was designed by American artist Janet Echelman. The sculpture was first commissioned by Denver for the Biennial of the Americas in 2010, and has since travelled to Sydney and Amsterdam.

Jen Lewin is an internationally renowned interactive sculptor with 15 years of experience creating large, immersive and interactive art pieces for the public. These works often inspire people to play, such as The Pool, or even giant, robotic, ethereal moths that dance based on human touch.

Lin Ta-Wei is a principal at Professional Lighting Designers’ Association and Illuminating Engineering Society. His projects have bagged several international awards, including the International Association of Lighting Designers’ Award of Excellence.

Dr. Sacha Kagan is currently a research associate at the Leuphana University Lueneburg, Institute of Sociology and Cultural Organisation. His research focuses on the trans-disciplinary field of art and (un-)sustainability.

Toby Cumberbatch is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at The Cooper Union. He is passionate about nurturing the best engineering practices to address the real needs of people.

As the director of the lighting consultancy division at ONG&ONG, Ong Swee Hong oversees projects spanning from large-scale lighting master planning, to commercial interior lighting design and light art installation
projects.
